The San Antonio Rampage snapped their four game losing streak against the Oklahoma City Barons on Sunday and it seemed they were the right antidote for the Silver and Black to start a new streak – of winning.
San Antonio (7-6-0-0, 14 points) defeated the Oklahoma City Barons (5-3-2-1, 13 points) 3-2 in a shootout in front of an announced crowd of 4,599 inside the Cox Convention Center on Tuesday morning.
The Rampage would lit the lamp before fans had even finished their morning coffee. Steven Kampfer skated into the Barons zone and sent a shot past Oklahoma City goaltender Richard Bachman to put San Antonio up 1-0 just 30 seconds into the game. Bobby Butler and Garrett Wilson assisted on Kampfer’s fifth goal of the season.
Oklahoma City knotted the score when Will Acton sent a wrister over the shoulder of Rampage netminder Dan Ellis at the 13:01 mark of the first period. The tally would be Acton’s first of the season.
San Antonio would take the lead before the end of the period. Connor Brickley received the puck from Steven Hodges and buried it past Bachman to put the Rampage up 2-1 at the 16:10 mark of the opening frame. Hodge’s his first point with the helper on the goal.
The Barons tied the game midway through the second period when Luke Gazdic beat Ellis from the slot to make things even at two. The third period saw both teams have scoring chances, but both goaltenders would stand tall to keep the game even at the end of regulation. In the extra period, San Antonio outshot Oklahoma City 6-5 but could not get the game-winning goal. Both teams went to the shootout for the first time this year.
In the shootout, Rocco Grimaldi scored the lone goal and Ellis stopped three Barons shooters to seal the 3-2 win for the Rampage.
Both teams finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play as Ellis made 26 of 28 saves.
The Rampage will return home to welcome the Charlotte Checkers to the AT&T Center for a pair of weekend games beginning on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
