Rampage earn 500th franchise win in weekend split with Reign

The San Antonio Rampage hit a milestone, winning their 500th game in franchise history, defeating the Ontario Reign in front of 6,573 fans at the AT&T Center on Friday night.

San Antonio lit the lamp just 38 seconds into the contest as Joe Whitney took advantage of an Ontario turnover, beating goaltender Jack Campbell to make it 1-0 early. The Reign answered back with a power play goal from Johnny Brodzinski to tie the game up at one goal apiece going into the second period.

Sergei Boikov scored his first AHL goal and gave the Rampage a 2-1 lead in the process at the 3:05 mark of the middle frame. The lead was short lived as Brodzinski netted his second of the night to knot the score at 2-2 at the end of 40 minutes.

Two straight goals from the Silver and Black would give them a two goal lead in the third period. Rocco Grimaldi caught Campbell out of his net and scored on a wraparound attempt and Sam Henley’s shot from the left wing made it 4-2. Brodzinski completed the hat trick and Adrian Kempe’s power play tally sent the game into overtime.

Grimaldi would seal the win for the Rampage in the extra frame, giving San Antonio the 5-4 win.

The victory would be the 500th in franchise history for the Rampage.

On Saturday, the two teams squared off again. This time it was the Reign coming away with the 4-3 victory to earn the split.

Up next: The Rampage are now 20-21-4-0 on the season and will return to the ice on Friday when they host the Texas Stars for their annual Pink in the Rink game at 7:30 p.m. at the AT&T Center.
