Rampage collapse as home problems continue

AT&T Center – Home ice has not been kind to the San Antonio Rampage as of late. The Silver and Black have not won inside the friendly confines and after a home collapse on Sunday, maybe a road trip has come at the right time.

The Rampage took a three goal lead in the second period, but would fall 4-3 to the San Diego Gulls in front of 3,955 fans at the AT&T Center for their 10th consecutive home loss.

San Antonio got on the scoreboard when Borna Rendulic put home his seventh goal of the season off a cross-ice pass from Nikita Zadorov, beating San Diego goaltender Matt Hackett to put the Rampage up 1-0. Michael Schumacher tipped in the biscuit past Hackett at 16:12 to give the Silver and Black a two-goal lead after 20 minutes.

Chris Bigras extended the lead to three goals for the Rampage in the middle frame when he backhanded the puck into the net at 4:17.

San Diego responded with two goals of their own before the period ended. Joseph Cramarossa got the Gulls on the scoreboard at 10:57 and Antonie Langaniere beat Spencer Martin four minutes later to cut the Rampage lead to 3-2 going into the final period.

The Gulls took advantage of a power play chance when Brandon Montaur knotted the game up at 3-3 early in the third period. Brian McGrattan put home a rebound to complete San Diego’s comeback and seal the 4-3 win.

“We have played better over this last stretch, but we have nothing to show for it,” Rampage Head Coach Dean Chynoweth said. “You keep harping on the fundamentals, the structure, and not allowing your compete and your energy to drop off.”

San Diego finished 1-for-2 on the power play, while San Antonio was scoreless on their lone chance of the game. Martin finished with 28 saves on 32 shots, while Hackett made 20 saves on 23 Rampage shots.

The loss drops the Silver and Black to a .0515 win percentage and sixth in the Pacific Division.

The Rampage are now 14-13-7-0 on the season and will return to the ice on Friday when they travel to California to face the Bakersfield Condors at 9 p.m. inside Rabobank Arena.
