Rampage can’t complete win in Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS – The San Antonio Rampage suffered a 7-4 loss to the Grand Rapids Griffins in front of 5,302 fans at Van Andel Arena on Wednesday morning.

A fast action paced opening period saw four goals scored, with three from the Silver and Black. Julien Nantel got the Rampage on the scoreboard when he took advantage of a Grand Rapids turnover and put a shot into the back of the net 1:59 into the game. Former Rampage winger Turner Elson knotted the game up 1-1 for the Griffins when he beat Rampage netminder Ville Husso at 5:09.

Vladislav Kamenev and Tage Thompson each had a goal for San Antonio as they took a 3-1 lead into the dressing room after the first period.


The second period saw another four goals scored, but this time it was from the Griffins. Matt Lorito took advantage of a 5-on-3 power play 2:28 into the frame, bringing the home team within a goal. Nantel netted his second of the day for San Antonio, scoring off a backdoor feed from Dominic Toninato. 

Grand Rapids got goals from Robbie Russo and Evgeny Svechnikov before the period ended to tie the game up at 4-4 going into the final period.

The third period belonged to the Griffins, who scored three goals in the final frame to get the win. Colin Campbell gave Grand Rapids the lead for good at 1:42 in the third, while Lorito and Corey Elkins sealed the 7-4 win.

Up next: The Rampage are now 7-3-1-0 (15 points) on the season and will return to the ice on Friday when they continue their road trip in Illinois to face the Rockford IceHogs at 7:30 p.m.
