Poor second period sees Rampage fall in Cleveland

CLEVELAND – The San Antonio Rampage allowed four goals in the second period as they fell 6-3 to the Cleveland Monsters (24-38-7-3) in front of 11,226 fans at Quicken Loans Arena on Friday night.

Cleveland opened the scoring just 50 seconds into the game when Ryan Kujawinski crashed the net and banged home the rebound past San Antonio netminder Spencer Martin. The Silver and Black would respond with two consecutive goals to take the lead. First, newcomer Turner Ottenbreit knotted the score at one with a slap shot that beat Cleveland goaltender Jeff Zatkoff.

Alex Belzile’s 14th goal of the season would give the Rampage a one-goal lead but the Monsters would tie things up when Paul Bittner redirected Ryan Collins’ shot to make it 2-2 going into the locker room at the break.

The second period belonged entirely to Cleveland with four of five goals scored. San Antonio took back the lead when Andrew Agozzino put a nice backhand shot into the back of the net at 3:56 of the middle stanza. From there, the Monsters would dominate. Jacob Graves, Calvin Thurkauf, Jefferson Dahl, and Kujawinski all had goals for Cleveland as they took a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes.

Neither team would score in the final period as the Monsters easily earned the win.

The Rampage are now 33-29-10-0 on the season and will return to the ice on Sunday when they take on the Monsters at Quicken Loans Arena at 5 p.m.
