The San Antonio Stars knew that defensively they would need to be better against the Seattle Storm if they wanted any chance of a victory. However, the offense was struggling to score once again – keeping the Silver and Black out of the win column.
Kayla McBride scored a team-high 11 points as the Stars fell 75-57 to the Storm in front of 9,600 fans inside KeyArena on Sunday night.
McBride was the lone Stars player in double figures. Rookie Kelsey Plum had eight points in her return to Washington state, where she played at the University of Washington for four years in college.
“I thought that Seattle outplayed us,” Stars coach Vickie Johnson said. “Overall Seattle did a great job of executing. (Breanna) Stewart made some shots. Usually she doesn’t make a whole lot of threes, but I knew she could really step up and make threes at home.”
San Antonio started the third quarter on a 5-0 run, but Seattle responded with a 15-0 run of their own to fully take control of the game.
The Storm were led by Breanna Stewart’s 22 points and 15 rebounds, a season-high. Crystal Langhorne added 10 points for Seattle (6-5), who snapped a three game losing streak with the loss.
Seattle was held to its lowest scoring output of the season, but their defense held the Stars to just 29 percent shooting and 57 overall points.
“I thought we started to look more how we’re supposed to look,” Storm coach Jenny Boucek said. “I have to go back and watch the film to evaluate exactly how well we did or did not play, but I did think we got more to how we want to play on both ends of the floor.”
Up next: The Stars are now 0-11 on the season and will return to the court on Wednesday afternoon when they travel to Dallas to close out their three-game road trip against the Wings at 12 p.m.
