Monsters scare Rampage in Cleveland

The San Antonio Rampage gave up four goals in the third period in a 6-2 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters on Tuesday.

The San Antonio Rampage were suppose to have an easy game against one of the worst defenses in the American Hockey League. Instead they could not stop a scoring streak in the final period, resulting in one of their most lopsided losses of the season.

San Antonio (23-14-3-0) gave up four goals in the third period as they suffered a 6-2 loss to the Lake Erie Monsters (17-16-3-3) in front of 5,248 fans inside Quicken Loans Arena on Tuesday evening.

The Rampage lit the lamp early with Greg Zanon’s first goal of the season just three minutes after the opening face off. Lake Erie knotted the game just 21 seconds later as Joey Hishon sent a backhand shot past San Antonio netminder Michael Houser. Corban Knight put the Silver and Black ahead when he sent a shot through the legs of Lake Erie goaltender Reto Berra two minutes later. The Monsters tied the game 2-2 going into the second period with a Andrew Agozzino goal at 6:47.

Despite San Antonio outshooting Lake Erie 13-11 in the second period, neither team could find the back of the net in the middle frame. We would remain locked at 2-2 going into the third period.

Lake Erie took the lead for good in the final period when Mike Sgarbossa punched home a rebound past Houser at 2:34. Kenny Ryan and Maxim Noreau tallied goals just five seconds apart to put the home team up by three goals. Dennis Everberg got in on the scoring action, beating Houser upstairs to seal the 6-2 win for the Monsters.

Houser made 24 saves on 30 shots, while Berra stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced. Both teams failed to convert on four power play chances as they went 0-for-4.

The Rampage will return to the ice on Saturday evening to close out a two-game series with the Monsters at 6 p.m. inside the Quicken Loans Arena.
