After an offseason of changes and growth, San Antonio FC returns to the pitch this evening for its second season in the United Soccer League and they begin 2017 the way they ended 2016: Against the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC.
New faces: SAFC comes into 2017 with new additions in several key positions. The most notable is to the backline, which saw Sebastian Ibeahga, Cyprian Hedrick, and Ben Newnam all make up a very experienced defense for San Antonio to help new starting goalkeeper Matt Cardone. As we covered in our season preview, SAFC’s defense allowed three consecutive clean sheets in preseason play.
Offensive firepower: Former San Antonio Scorpion Billy Forbes returns to the Alamo City after a stint with Rayo OKC in 2016. He joins fan favorite Rafa Castillo, who led San Antonio in goals for the 2016 campaign. Kris Tyrpak returned back to Texas in the offseason and is expected to join Michael Reed in getting goals in the new season.
Against RGV FC: San Antonio FC is looking for their first win in franchise history over the Houston Dynamo affiliate. SAFC went 0-3-1 through four games in the 2016 season and recorded their only point against RGV in a scoreless draw on May 25, 2016 at Toyota Field.
Sunday Funday: San Antonio FC have had success on Sunday’s in their short history. SAFC owns a 2-0-2 record in Sunday matches.
San Antonio FC and RGV FC will kick off at 6 p.m. inside the brand new H-E-B Park. Fans can catch the action on the USL YouTube Channel. Follow Red Black 90 for live updates.
Match prediction: San Antonio FC’s tough defense will be put to the test, but has the talent to live up to challenge, combined with SAFC’s offense – it should be enough for San Antonio to escape South Texas with a point. Score: SAFC 1, RGV FC 1.
