Highlights:
AT&T Center – San Antonio Stars coach Vickie Johnson said her team needed to do the little things in order to win games. On Friday night, they did more than the little things and it resulted in their first win of the season.
Isabelle Harrison finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds as she led the Stars to a 89-82 win over the Chicago Sky in front of 4,942 fans at the AT&T Center, snapping their 14-game losing streak.
Moriah Jefferson added 13 points, including a game-clinching three-pointer. Kayla McBride knocked down two free throws to go along with her 14 points in the final moments. San Antonio’s fourth quarter woes did not plague them on this night as they outscored Chicago 22-19 in the final period.
“I’m so proud of the ladies for stepping up,” Johnson said. “Not just the players on the court but also the players on the bench who were ready to come in and bring their A-game. I preach to them all the time, you only can control what you can control. And what you can control is your skill set and knowing the defensive schemes and offensive executions.”
Harrison finished with a double-double, just her second of the season. The second year forward also hit her first career three-pointer in the first half.
“I’m just so happy right now, it’s a great feeling,” she said. “We just couldn’t hang down our heads anymore, you know we were saying before we went out on the floor that ‘tonight’s the night.’”
The Sky were led by Alley Quigley’s 27 points. Stefani Dolson added 14 for Chicago (3-12), who shot 53 percent for the game.
“She practices extremely hard, she studies the game, she studies for each opponent,” Stocks said of Quigley. “She evaluates defenses she reads things very well. What you see on the court, when you see her scoring, it’s only a manifestation of how much she works in being a student of the game and how much she works on the court.”
Up next: The Stars are now 1-14 on the season and will return to the court on Wednesday night when they welcome the Connecticut Sun to the AT&T Center at 7 p.m.
