After last Thursday’s WNBA Draft, there was speculation if the San Antonio Stars would keep the No. 1 overall pick Kelsey Plum out of the University of Washington. There were also rumors running wild on social media that Plum was unhappy coming to San Antonio and wanted to sit out the 2017 season.
Well, on Friday – the newest member of the Stars put all the rumors and speculation to rest. She did the usual television appearances on the morning shows and had a nice lunch with representatives from the Stars before meeting with the media for the very first time.
“Its an honor to be here,” Plum said. “Knowing the history of the Spurs and what their capabilities are. They have a vision and to know you’re part of that vision, that is the cool part.”
The 22-year-old also discussed the comparisons to James Harden and Stephen Curry of the NBA due to her high offensive power. She quickly shot down those comparisons, saying she wants to create her own path.
“I want to be known as a great player, not ‘the kid who scores all the time’, she said. “That is not my identity, that is not why I play basketball. I play basketball because I love it. Who knows what Coach Johnson will want me to do, but what she wants me to do, I’ll do it. I feel its very limiting to know as just a scorer.”
Other topics touched on during the interview were the Stars fan base, Coach Vickie Johnson, Plum’s expectations and a food that Plum is obsessed with.
Listen to the entire interview with Plum during today’s media session at the AT&T Center.
The Stars will open the 2017 season on May 13 against the New York Liberty on the road. The team will host the Phoenix Mercury for their home opener at the AT&T Center on May 19 at 7 p.m.
