Halftime: UTSA 29 @ UTEP 32

It wasn’t a bad first half, but it wasn’t a great one either. That’s likely the feeling of the head coaches for both UTSA (8-8, 4-5) and UTEP (7-8, 3-6) after the first 20 minutes in El Paso this evening. The result is a halftime score of 32-29, which is much different than the 46-38 score at the half on Thursday in the first game of this home-and-home series between the two schools.

The lack in scoring may likely be due to two of the top scorers in this contest finding early foul trouble, as both UTEP’s Bryson Williams and UTSA’s Jhivvan Jackson had a pair of early fouls that took them off the court. Jackson finished the half with 4 points, and Williams finished with about scoring. The good thing for both of these programs is that they each have two dynamic players, and Keaton Wallace leads the Roadrunners in scoring with 7 points, while Souley Boum leads the Miners and all scorers with 8 first-half points.

sn’t tell the story, both teams shot pretty poor from the floor in the first period. UTSA finished the half shooting 31.3% on their attempts, and just 16.7% (2-of-12) from deep. UTEP on the other hand is shooting 37.5% in the game, but has yet to make a three-pointer, missing all four attempts.

Coach Henson and Coach Terry, of UTSA and UTEP respectively, may need to get gutsy and roll with their scorers who are in foul trouble if they want to pull away with a win tonight. With a halftime score so close, this one can still be anyone’s game, and it may come down to who gets hot first, which Williams and Jackson could both really help their schools with.

After winning the first game of the series on Thursday, the Roadrunners are one game ahead of the Miners in the Conference USA standings. UTEP can even things back up with a win tonight against a UTSA team that is seeking their first road win of the season.
