Week 3 sees the Incarnate Word Cardinals return home for the first time in 2018 after dropping two straight on the road to open the season. Saturday night sees UIW take on an old foe, Stephen F. Austin. We caught up with Chris Reyes (@ChrisRadioReyes) once again to get his thoughts on the matchup.

  • 1 – (1A210) UIW started its season with two blowout losses, what’s been the biggest takeaways from the first two games of the season? Both positive and where improvement is needed?

I think the biggest takeaway is the offense of changes. As well as Jon Copeland and two freshman quarterbacks who have played very well, have made mistakes, but overall have shown the explosive ability that we have not seen in some time.

I think the next step in UIW’s growth since it is a young team, is to play with more consistency on the field.

  • 2 – The Cardinals are winless all-time against Stephen F. Austin, going 0-4 overall. What is it about this team that presents such a challenge for UIW?

In the past, Steven F. Austin has had Zac Conque and he leads SFA to two FCS playoff appearances. He was a real thorn in the side of UIW’s defense. This year we can expect SFA to play a very similar offense to UIW’s.

  • 3- Stephen F. Austin has had an interesting start to their season. They’ve lost their season opener 63-6 to Mississippi State and had a game canceled. How much will rust be a factor for the Lumberjacks on Saturday?

I don’t think rust will be a factor. In fact, an early bye week can be beneficial. I will say that if it rains, this will be the biggest x-factor of the game. When UIW came up just short of beating SFA, curiously enough, there was rain in the area that night.

  • 4 – UIW will be at home for the first time under Coach Eric Morris. How will the crowd help the Cardinals in this game?

I think the crowd plays a big part in home games. Historically, UIW has performed better when playing at home. The crowd provides extra energy that the players can feed off of.

  • 5 – Tell us something we should know about Stephen F. Austin.

Historically, when UIW faces off against Stephen F. Austin, the weather is usually a factor.
