Game Day #5 sees Incarnate Word back at home as they welcome in the Southeastern Louisiana Lions (2-3, 2-1 SLC) to Benson Stadium on Hispanic Heritage Night. We caught up with Chris Reyes (@ChrisRadioReyes ) once again to the get the 411 on UIW’s run and their upcoming matchup with the Lions.
- 1) (1A210) UIW enters Saturday’s as winners of two straight. What has been the difference in the previous two games that have turned the tide for the Cardinals?
The difference has been the defensive turnovers. UIW’s defense has been getting after opposing quarterbacks via sacks or interceptions. Even when they don’t get home UIW has been forcing 3 and outs and keeping games close, so the offense is always in striking distance with Copeland and Company.
- 2) Defensively, the Cardinals seem to have improved the last two games overall. What can you tell us about UIW’s defensive improvements?
Continuing with the answer from Q1 some players that have been cooking… Markel Cook’s in 2 games has had 19 total tackles, 2 TFLs, 2 Fumble recoveries, 2 PBUs, Silas Stewart also has been 22 total tackles, 1 TFLs, and 1 INT. Lastly, as a whole unit vs Abilene Christian the Cardinals defense dialed in with 1 sack, 1 forced fumble, and 8 QB hurries.
- 3) Southeastern Louisiana is coming off a win heading into Saturday’s game. Does that give them a confidence boost as they prepare to take on UIW, who seem to be rolling on both sides of the ball?
I think it does. Their game last week vs Northwestern State was a tough one. They had to hold on late as the demons mounted an impressive comeback attempt. It also helps that in the past UIW has upset the Lions a few times, so the fire will be there. I think it also helps that UIW is one of the two remaining undefeated conference teams.
4) Tell us something we should know about Southeastern Louisana.
The Cardinals have faced off against their QB before Chason Virgil. Interestingly enough Virgil was the starting QB at Fresno State last year when the Cardinals played the Bulldogs in California. This time around Cardinals will be hoping for a better result than the first time.

Keys To Victory
UIW’s defense has been the story of their recent winning streak. They held Stephen F. Austin to just seven total points in their home opener and last week kept an aggressive Abilene Christian offense in check in the second half, allowing just six points.
Meanwhile, the offense has stayed red hot. Over the last two games, the Cardinals have scored 31 points and 44 points respectively. That’s an average of 37.5 points per game after averaging just 23 in the first two games of the season.
The Cardinals’ recent improvements in both offense and defense make for exciting times at UIW. It is because of this, we’re calling a win for the home team this weekend.
