A look at Colorado

In Colorado’s past five matches they have found themselves a bit of success with three wins and only two losses.

Their most recent win took place in front of a sellout crowd of 8,023 fans at Weidner field against Real Monarchs SLC. The Switchbacks overpowers the Monarchs in a 3-1 victory. Players Deshane Beckford, Hadji Barry, and Michael Edwards proved strong for Colorado that night as they added their names to the scoresheet that Sunday night.

Their previous win before that was another home game against New Mexico United which also ended in a 3-1 victory. After a rain delay, New Mexico initially took the lead before Colorado was able to equalize the match just eleven minutes before halftime. Hadji Berry again found himself on the scoresheet with two goals this time, as well as Deshane Beckford with one.

The first of Colorado’s most recent wins was to none other than Austin Bold FC who was the most recent team to beat SAFC in regular-season play. Of their three recent wins, this one against Austin was Colorado’s only away victory. Despite being down a man, the Switchbacks kept the score leveled for a majority of the match before 17-year-old Yaya Toure snagged a 90th-minute game-winning goal to give Colorado the 3-2 victory.

Their two losses came from New Mexico United and Orange County SC. On July 9, The Switchbacks took on New Mexico United at Isotopes Park where they fell short 3-1. Hadji Barry was the only player from Colorado to put his name on the scoresheet that night. On July 1, not a single Colorado player was able to add to the scoreline as Orange County SC claimed a 2-0 victory over the Switchbacks at Weidner Field.

A look at San Antonio

Unlike Colorado, San Antonio has not found much success in their past five matches. While SAFC only suffered two losses just as Colorado did, they have not won a game since May 22.

In San Antonio’s most recent match they were unable to find a goal throughout the entire 90 minutes as Austin Bold claimed the 1-0 victory. Their prior loss came from an away game on June 16 against New Mexico United where their opponent also kept the clean sheet with a 2-0 win.

On June 11 San Antonio went home with a 1-1 draw against Las Vegas Lights FC. SAFC was initially in the lead for the majority of the game. However, in the 80th minute, the Lights leveled the scoreline after a penalty was given.

In San Antonio’s next home game on June 19, they also earned a 1-1 draw. SAFC took on the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros and again gained the initial lead. And again, could not hold onto the clean sheet as they gave up a goal only a few minutes later. Fortunately, they were able to secure the point by not allowing RGV another late goal.

In their most recent draw, San Antonio met Real Monarchs SLC at Zions Bank Stadium. This time it was their opponent who gained the initial lead. For the majority of the match, it looked like the Monarchs were going to keep the clean sheet. After SAFC head coach Alen Marcina made a few changes, SAFC quickly added themselves to the scoresheet to snag the draw.

Despite San Antonio’s recent league results, the team showed well this past week in the SAFC International Showcase. On July 6 SAFC’s starting lineup looked a little bit different, but the youngsters who starred in the night’s match certainly set the pace for the week.

Following Tuesday’s game, a more typical starting XI was demonstrated and they carried the momentum set by the younger players. Should SAFC carry this same momentum into the match against the Switchbacks, there is a strong chance for them to come away with the three points. Especially with Colorado coming off of a 3-1 loss, it is San Antonio’s perfect opportunity to take advantage of their loss of momentum.
