Former Spurs guard featured in new documentary “Chi-Town”

After several years of filming and production, the documentary “Chi-Town”, which chronicles the rise of former Austin and San Antonio Spurs guard Keifer Sykes, has been released.

The film which was produced and directed by Full Court Films, and then acquired by Dogwoof in hopes of releasing the movie to a worldwide audience, made its world premiere last weekend at SXSW (South by Southwest for the uninitiated).

“Chi-Town” begins by following around a 17-year-old Sykes as he battles for playing time on his high school basketball team and then follows him on his journey to the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, through his time with the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs, Austin Spurs, eventually ending as Sykes travels through Turkey and South Korea playing professional basketball.

Sykes, who spent his early years growing up on the violent south side of Chicago, was a phenomenal talent for the Austin Spurs during the 2015-16 season.

After going undrafted and performing well for Cleveland’s summer league team, Sykes was signed to a contract with San Antonio before being waived and joining Austin.

He played in 50 games for Austin and started 37 times while averaging 12.4 points per game. Sykes also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists during his time in the G League.

If you missed the film, there’s one last chance to see it at SXSW.

The movie will be shown for the final time during the festival on Wednesday, March 14th at 8:15 p.m. at the Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. A badge or wristband will be required.
