The San Antonio Stars are in a bit of a funk on the road, but had recent success against the New York Liberty. However, without three players for the fourth straight game, that success could not continue.

Danielle Robinson had 18 points, but it was not enough as the depleted Stars fell 84-68 to the Liberty in front of 18,617 fans inside Madison Square Garden on camp day Wednesday morning.

Sophia Young-Malcolm and Danielle Adams had 11 points each and Dearica Hamby added 10 for San Antonio, who played just nine players for the fourth straight game. Kayla McBride, Alex Montgomery and Jia Perkins all missed the game with injuries.

“We knew we were going to be young, but we did not know we were going to be injured,” Stars head coach Dan Hughes said. “You take your two leading scorers (McBride and Perkins), and never have had Alex Montgomery this season.”

Essence Carson scored 16 points off the bench to lead the Liberty. Epiphanny Prince added 13 points and Tina Charles chipped in 14 for New York (8-5), who beat the Stars for the first time since 2011.

“I think our scoring and our shooting will be a big lift with Epiphanny Prince in the game,” New York head coach Bill Laimbeer said. “She is a solid guard and she is a quiet assassin. She’ll make a lot of big shots. She was a quality pickup for us. We have a good solid depth to our basketball team and she’s one to account for that.”

San Antonio kept it close for much of the first half, going into halftime down 39-30. As the third quarter began, a 7-3 run by the silver and black cut the deficit to four. However, that is as close as San Antonio would get.

The Stars are now 3-11 on the season and will return to the court on Friday when they welcome the Tulsa Shock to the Freeman Coliseum at 7 p.m.
