The UTSA Roadrunners have never been here before.  After a nail-biting 52-46 victory in Bowling Green, KY over the Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers, The UTSA program has started the season 6-0 for the first time.  But that’s just where the record setting starts.

Heart Stopping Finish

WKU trailed throughout the fourth quarter but chipped away to find themselves within 6 points of the Roadrunners with possession at their own 30 with just over 3 minutes left. The Hilltoppers worked their way to a 1st and Goal opportunity at the 5 yard line. An illegal block penalty moved them back to the 20 yard line with under a minute to go.  An incomplete pass and a 5 yard run milked even more time off the clock.  On 3rd and Goal, WKU star QB Bailey Zappe threw a ball dwon to the 4 yard line. The pass fluttered ever so slightly, and in to the hands of a diving Clarence Hicks, the UTSA Senior Linebacker.

Frank the Tank

Last week after the Roadrunners defeated the UNLV Rebels, UTSA Head Coach made it clear to any one who would listen that Frank Harris was playing his best football.  Harris put together a career game against the Hilltoppers.”Frank got so tired of me talking about Bailey. (Zappe)” Traylor said after the game. Harris was 28 for 38 passing with 349 yards and 6 touchdowns. That last stat is a school record.

But, wait, there’s more.  Harris also caught a touchdown pass from Joshua Cephus in the second quarter.  The only blemish on Harris’ night was a tipped ball at the line of scrimmage that wound up in that arms of the WKU defense.  Harris even worked that into a big play on his stat sheet as he punched the ball out forcing a fumble that UTSA recovered.

You Serious, Clark?

Last week, with Zakhari Franklin held out, JT Clark stepped up big to help the offense outscore UNLV. Franklin was back this week but Clark still showed up big. Clark caught all 7 of his targets for 160 yards and 3 touchdowns. Clark’s night was the first time a UTSA receiver had 3 touchdowns in a single game.

Sincere-ly Special

Sincere McCormick quietly stacked up 120 rushing yards and 22 receiving yards. In the first quarter, McCormick crossed over the 3,000 rushing yard threshold for the first time in Roadrunner history.

In the Driver’s Seat

UTSA moves to 6-0 and 2-0 in Conference USA play.  The Roadrunners are bowl eligible for the second straight year. UTEP and UAB are both 2-0 in Conference play as well. UTSA will meet the UTEP Miners in El Paso on November 6th and then welcome the UAB Blazers to the Alamodome 2 weeks later on November 20th.

Next Please!

UTSA has a homecoming match-up with the Rice Owls next week in the Alamodome. Rice is 2-3 and 1-0 in Conference play. They defeated Southern Miss 24-19 last week and have sat idle this week.  UTSA and Rice will meet up this Saturday at 5pm.
