EDINBURG – San Antonio FC (7-0-3) pushed their winning streak to three games with a 3-1 victory over RGV FC Toros (0-7-3) at HEB Park On Friday night.
The win expands SAFC’s winning streak and keeps them undefeated on the season atop the Group D standings.
“Hats off to RGV for 90-plus minutes,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “They made it very difficult and very challenging for us. It wasn’t our best performance; we will accept that, and we’ll learn. We will look at some of the things we did well and things we need to improve on and sharpen. But overall, the team demonstrated their grit and we are proud of them for that.”
For the second straight game, San Antonio struck early. Blake Smith took the pass from midfielder Zachary Herivaux and buried a shot in the far post with his right foot, putting the visiting side up 1-0 just four minutes.
SAFC added to their lead in 20th minute when Luis Solignac scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season to make it a two-goal game but RGV got one back before the halftime break when Robert Castellanos scored to make it 2-1 after 45 minutes.
The second half would remain scoreless until Gonzalo Di Renzo stole the ball from RGV goalkeeper Paul Blanchette and slotted it home into the empty net, making it 3-1 in stoppage time.
“We are obviously happy to get the result,” Smith said. “Coming here and getting all three points was what we wanted to do. We were a bit sloppy both offensively and defensively. We are happy with the result but there’s a lot to improve upon for the next match.”
San Antonio FC is now (7-0-3, 24 points) on the season and will return to the pitch next Saturday when they welcome RGV FC (0-7-3, 3 points) to Toyota Field at 8 p.m.
