SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio FC (2-0-1) returned home to Toyota Field for their first home match since March 7 and earned a 1-0 win over the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros (0-3-1) on Saturday night.
The match was played without fans or media in attendance due to COVID-19 protocols as players and coaches from both clubs wore masks and the balls were sanitized during stoppages in play.
“We did a good job managing the game,” said SAFC Head Coach Alen Marcina. “To get three points at home is always a good moment.”
Both clubs were aggressive as SAFC won the duels and were on the attack in the first half but could not find the back of the net. RGV came out of the gates in the second half and pressured the San Antonio net but they held tight defensively.
San Antonio broke the scoreless tie when midfielder Cristian Parano found forward Gonzalo Di Renzo, who beat RGV FC goalkeeper Paul Blanchette with a shot between the legs to put the home side up a goal.
RGV would threaten to score in the final few minutes but SAFC held on for the win and giving goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair his first clean sheet of the season.
“We learned from last week, we bunkered down, we didn’t let up and we were hyper-focused in the last 10 minutes,” SAFC Defender Mitchelle Taintor said. “That was huge and that was the difference for us.”
San Antonio FC is now 2-0-1 (7 points) and will return to the pitch next Saturday when they face the Austin Bold at 8 p.m. at Bold Stadium to begin a three-game road trip.
