SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Rampage closed out 2018 with a 4-2 victory over the Texas Stars (17-11-4) in front of 5,143 fans at the AT&T Center on Sunday afternoon.
The win was the sixth straight at home for San Antonio and the 10th win in their last 11 games at the AT&T Center, with three of those wins coming against Texas.
“I thought offensively we did a lot of good things,” Rampage coach Drew Bannister said. “They [Texas] had some quality chances but overall, I’m happy with the game and how we played, especially against a team like Texas.”
San Antonio opened the scoring in the first period when Ryan Olsen deposited the puck past Texas netminder Philippe Desrosiers at 9:02 and Austin Poganski‘s fifth of the year with 20 seconds to go in the period gave the Rampage a 2-0 lead going into the second period.
The Stars began the middle frame by getting the first four shots on net and Joel L’Esperance‘s goal cut the Texas deficit to one. San Antonio answered back with two straight goals to push their lead to three. Zach Sanford and Connor Bleackley scored 33 seconds apart to give the Rampage a 4-1 lead going into the final 20 minutes.
Texas outshot the Rampage 12-10 in the final period as L’Esperance’s second of the day would finalize the scoring, giving San Antonio the home win.
Rampage goaltender Jordan Binnington picked up his ninth win of the season, just hours after returning to San Antonio from St. Louis. Additionally, Jordan Kyrou extended his point streak to 11 games.
“Jordan came back down and is getting some games in,” Bannister said. “With Husso being out for a period of time, it is important that he gets games in. We’ll see what happens after that.”
The Rampage are now 15-17-1 (31 points) on the season and will return to the ice to open 2019 against the Manitoba Moose (12-16-2, 26 points) at 7 pm Central Time from the AT&T Center.
