San Antonio FC defender Sebastien Ibeagha has been named the 2017 USL Defender of the Year, the league announced on Tuesday.

Ibeagha finished the 2017 season by leading the league with 190 clearances in over 2,700 minutes played for SAFC. He is the second member of the club to win an award after Diego Restrepo was awarded with Goalkeeper of the Year honors on Monday.

“We are honored as a club to have two individual awards in as many days,” said SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell in a team press release. “Sebastien had some stand out performances this year and played an important role in our team’s defensive shape. He was able to come up with some big plays to help the team throughout the year.”

The 25-year-old was the backbone behind a league-best defense for San Antonio FC, who led the league in shutouts, had the fewest losses with four, and got into the second round of the USL Cup Playoffs.

It was the second time Ibeagha has been awarded in the offseason after earning USL All-League First Team honors.

“It’s truly an honor to win this award, but I would be remiss if I failed to mention how big of a role the entire team played in this accomplishment,” Ibeagha said via a team press release. “We had a great group this season, and without them we would not have had such a great defensive record. I want to thank the USL for giving me this award, and I’m honored to be among the other finalists who had great seasons.”

Ibeagha finished the 2017 season by leading San Antonio FC in clearances, aerial duels won (61.4 percent), interceptions (55) and blocks (20).
