It is the home opener for the San Antonio Stars (0-2) as they take on the Phoenix Mercury (1-1). In search of their first win, the Stars will undoubtedly come out hungry and determined. Phoenix will look to build off their win on Wednesday night against the Indiana Fever. Here are three things to watch.
How will Brittney Griner be defended?
At 6’8, Griner is a matchup problem on both ends of the floor. The Stars do not have anyone with Griner’s size to counter, so it will be a group effort when dealing with her.
She is coming off an outstanding game against the Indiana Fever, where finished with 32 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
Griner impacts the game in so many ways, so it will be intriguing to see how the Stars attempt to limit her. If she has another dominant showing, it will be a long night for the Silver and Black.
Will Monique Currie continue scoring efficiently?
Moriah Jefferson and Kelsey Plum are not suiting up for the third consecutive game. Currie, who is averaging 27 points through two games, has been the primary source of offense in their absence.
Now, with the same opportunity, will the savvy veteran be able to maintain her impressive play?
Currie also has some history with Phoenix, as she was a full-time starter there for one season before being traded to San Antonio in 2016.
Danielle Robinson’s return to San Antonio
Robinson was the Stars’ point guard for five seasons before being traded to the Mercury on Jan 31 in exchange for Isabelle Harrison and the No. 5 pick in the 2017 WNBA Draft.
This will be her first game against the Stars since the trade, so it will be intriguing to see how she performs.
Through two games, she is averaging 9.0 points, 7.5 assists and 3.5 rebounds.
Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. CT from the AT&T Center. The game will also be available on Twitter.
