San Antonio FC advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open Cup for the second straight season after earning a 2-1 win over Houston Dutch Lions FC on Wednesday night.
SAFC got the scoring started in the 17th minute when Victor Araujo easily put the ball home for the early 1-0 advantage. San Antonio extended their lead just before halftime when Aly Alberto Hassan when he beat Houston goalkeeper Marc Olson to put the visiting side up 2-0.
Houston got one back in the second half as Nathaniel Coons beat Lee Johnston in the 62nd minute to make it 2-1, but SAFC would hold on for the win and to advance.
“It was difficult,” Johnston said of the match, “They were the underdog and were at their home field. The pressure was on us, we managed the first half well, and in the second half there were some things that we can learn from, but overall to come away with a victory is the most important thing.”
SAFC will now face the Tulsa Roughnecks FC in the third round of the U.S. Open Cup on May 31 in Oklahoma.
San Antonio FC will return to USL action on Saturday when they take on Phoenix Rising FC at Toyota Field at 7:30 p.m.
