AT&T Center – In her WNBA preseason debut, Kelsey Plum led the San Antonio Stars to an 87-81 win over the Dallas Wings at the AT&T Center on Saturday afternoon.

The rookie guard had a game high 19 points and five assists in 29 minutes to lead all scorers. However, Plum wasn’t alone. Also in her WNBA debut, the fifth overall pick of this year’s draft, Nia Coffey, contributed with 17 points and five rebounds.

When asked if Coffey’s performance was surprising in any way, first year Head Coach, Vickie Johnson showed complete confidence in the rookie forward.

“No! I wasn’t surprised,” chuckled Johnson when asked about Coffey’s performance. “She has had a great first week of training camp. She still has a lot of stuff to learn. She plays with a lot of energy.”

The Stars played solid with their two rookies playing for the majority of the game. Living up to her reputation, Plum played with great intensity as she ended the game without a single turnover.

“I just tried to take care of the ball,” said Plum of completing the game without a turnover. “That’s my job, to take care of the ball and keep my teammates involved.”

Plum currently holds the record for NCAA basketball women’s points and she started her WNBA career with a great game to boost her confidence going forward.

“I was super excited to just get out there,” Plum said of her WNBA debut. “Finally put the uniform on, you know, I actually took a moment when I saw my name on the back of the jersey.”

All of San Antonio should be just as excited as Kelsey for the 2017 season with her and Coffey in silver and black. The Stars will continue their preseason campaign on May 6th at 6pm in Los Angeles against the defending champion Sparks.
