San Antonio FC kicked off the 2017 USL season with a 1-0 win over the Rio Grande Valley Toros FC inside the brand new H-E-B Park on Sunday night for their first win in the South Texas Derby series.
SAFC came out aggressive and it paid off as the visiting side put it an early goal. Midfielder Billy Forbes took the pass from Cesar Elizondo and put home a shot in the right corner of the net to put San Antonio up 1-0 in the 15th minute.
RGV picked up their play in the second half, sending more balls to the net. However, SAFC goalkeeper Matt Cardone stood tall as he made several key saves to keep his team out in front. Toros midfielder Kyle Murphy had a open net, but shot it wide. San Antonio would hold on for the win, their first in team history over RGV.
“Every time San Antonio and RGV meet the games are very close and very tight, and tonight was no different,” SAFC coach Darren Powell said. “Hats off to RGV for playing a good game, but again, I’m very proud of the guys for their resilience and character which got us out on top today.”
Player of the match:
Matt Cardone is RB90’s Player of the Match: His saves in the second half were key to San Antonio’s win. With help from his backline, Cardone stopped four consecutive shots in just over three minutes as RGV applied pressure.
