San Antonio FC made a recent signing as they acquired forward Franck Tayou for the 2016 USL season.
Tayou, a native of Cameroon, emigrated to the U.S. with his family when he was was young. He played club soccer before joining his junior college team at Tacoma Community College and also Garden City Community College. He then went on to play at West Virginia University where his team, the Mountaineers, advanced to the NCAA championship twice.
After college, Tayou played on a few Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) teams: the Las Vegas Legends, Tulsa Revolution, and Soles de Sonora. Tayou also played on a couple Premiere Development League teams: Real Maryland, and the Las Vegas Mobsters.
Since joining SAFC, he has made his presence felt. And the fans have quickly taken a liking to him. He has scored two goals and nearly had a third in Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Oklahoma City.
“Franck is a big guy,” said San Antonio’s Michael Reed after a recent game. “Him being out there definitely helps us out in a big way. He is great and he quickly goes to work.”
Much like this past NBA season when the fans took a liking to Boban Marjanovic, Tayou is getting similar treatment.
“He’s so great,” SAFC fan Michael Ruiz said. “You normally don’t see someone that big playing soccer and the fact he is out here scoring and building connections with us (fans) is great.”
