AT&T Center – The San Antonio Stars know their play has been inconstant all season. The Silver and Black saw more up and down play on Friday, but it was not enough to get their second straight win.
Kayla McBride scored 21 points, but the Stars rally fell short 84-75 in front of 6,107 fans at the AT&T Center.
Dearica Hamby added 16 points and Moriah Jefferson continued to show her improvement with 15. Monique Currie chipped in 13 for San Antonio, who shot a season-high 46 percent.
“We played pretty well in the third quarter and had we had an even basketball game that would have given us separation going into the fourth, Stars coach Dan Hughes said. “It’s funny, they made some shots to win the game but I felt the way we played in the second half gave us a chance.”
San Antonio outscored Indiana 26-13 in the third quarter to make it a one point game going into the fourth quarter. A 29-20 final ten minutes would be the difference for the game.
“I think everybody got pumped up and we went on a run and were able to tie the game, and I think it rallied the troops and we kind of picked things up, but we have to be able to do that from the beginning and that’s something we’re working on as a team,” Currie said.
The Fever were led by Tamika Catchings’ 23 points. Marissa Coleman was the only other player in double figures with 11 for Indiana (5-7), who snapped their three game losing streak.
“We came out with a lot of energy and really like a true focus to what we needed to do,” Catchings said. “San Antonio, they’re a good team so they fought back third quarter, tied it and went ahead a little bit. So for us, I’m really proud of our team just coming together at that point in time – re-shifting our focus and doing the little things.”
Up next: The Stars are now 2-8 on the season and will hit the road for their first extensive road trip of the season. They will return to the court on Sunday afternoon when they face the Connecticut Sun at noon.
