San Antonio FC coach Darren Powell was happy his club was in U.S. Open Cup play, meaning his team would stay loose instead of having ten days off. After a midweek match, we’re sure he’s even happier going back to USL action over the weekend.

SAFC scored twice in the second half as they defeated Des Moines Menace 2-1 at Valley Stadium on Wednesday night in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Both teams went into halftime scoreless despite solid chances from both clubs.

Des Moines got on the scoreboard first when Christian Flath put the ball past San Antonio goalkeeper Josh Ford in the 59th minute. SAFC put the pressure on and capitalized when Sam McBride put home a header off a set piece 13 minutes later to make it one goal apiece.

San Antonio took the lead for good in the 80th minute when Jacques Francois scored on a cross to give SAFC the 2-1 lead and come from behind win.

“The game was hectic, but I think we kept our heads,” said McBride. “After their first goal we got control of the game again and took our chances, so it’s good to come here and get a win.”

With the victory, SAFC will now move on to the fourth round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and face the Houston Dynamo of the MLS on June 15 in Houston.

Up next: San Antonio FC will return to the pitch on Saturday when they travel to take on the Rio Grande Valley FC Toros at 7:30 p.m.
