Toyota Field – After months of building a team and anticipation, San Antonio’s newest soccer team finally took the pitch at Toyota Field. And they left a solid impression on the fans and for the future of soccer in the Alamo City.
Danny Garcia scored the lone goal for San Antonio FC as they battled to a 1-1 against the Swope Park Rangers in front of a record crowd of 8,466 fans at Toyota Field on Saturday night.
With the crowd rocking all throughout pregame, Swope Park took the air out of the stadium with an early goal. SAFC failed to clear the ball out of the zone and Daniel Salloi took advantage with a shot to the upper corner of the net as the Rangers took the lead in the first minute.
Despite solid chances, SAFC could not get the equalizer. Danny Garcia’s first attempt went wide of the net, but he would redeem himself later. Just before halftime, Carlos Alvarez sent the ball to Garcia, who sent a shot past a leaping Jon Kempin to knot the game up 1-1 in the 42nd minute.
The second half saw both clubs slow the pace down with neither team getting solid scoring chances. SAFC’s best scoring chance came in late in the match when Shawn Chin sent a shot wide of the net. Neither team got the go-ahead goal and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
“It was our first home game and it wasn’t the great start we were hoping for,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “But that happens and I can’t say enough how proud I am of the guys for coming back and responding well, and putting themselves in a position to win it. The most important thing you look for is the response of the players, and tonight I thought the response was good.”
San Antonio went down early for the first time this season, but used the energy from the crowd to rally and focus to get the game-tying goal.
“I want to give credit to the fans,” Garcia said. “They were behind us from the first minute, and even though we went down early in the game, the fans kept cheering on for us. I think that was one of the biggest motivations for us.”
San Antonio FC is now 1-0-1 (4 points) on the season and will return to the pitch on Wednesday night when they travel to Los Angeles to face LA Galaxy II inside the StubHub Center.
