San Antonio FC goalkeeper Matt Cardone is ready to ‘defend his home goal’ aka his hometown of San Antonio, Texas when he suits up for SAFC beginning next month.
Cardone comes to SAFC from the San Antonio Scorpions. The change has been one he has welcomed and looks forward to getting on the pitch this Sunday.
“Every year you have new players, new coaches and personnel,” Cardone said. “It has been a good transition to me. To be in the same place and to be around some of the people. It’s been good.”
The 22-year-old is a MacArthur High School graduate and San Antonio native. He played for the Scorpions in 2015, where he made three starts.
“Matt is a local boy who’s grown up here,” said SAFC Head Coach Powell. “He is very honest and works very hard. I saw him in preseason with Orlando City last year and he is a very talented young goalkeeper. We expect big things out of Matt for the next couple of years.”
His hometown of San Antonio might expect something from Cardone as they get ready to pack the stadium on April 9. However, Matt says he is feeling no pressure.
“I’m just happy to be able to represent the city,” Cardone said with a smile. “You’d think there would be more pressure, but I’m ready to represent the community here.”
The fans can see Cardone and the rest of San Antonio FC in action when they hit the field for the first time on Sunday in Seattle before the team returns home for their home opener on April 9 at 7:30 p.m.
