Draft night once again came with a surprise, as the San Antonio Stars traded their ninth overall pick to the New York Liberty in exchange for guard/forward Alex Montgomery.

Last season, Montgomery averaged 5.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.0 assists in 21.9 minutes with the Liberty. In her four year WNBA career, she has posted numbers of 4.2 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.0 assist in 124 total games. The 6-1 forward can also help the Stars by spreading the floor, the 26-year-old is 38.3 percent from beyond the arc in her career.

“One of the things we needed to do was become more athletic, a little longer,” Stars head coach and general manager Dan Hughes said. “We’ve become a young team. D-Rob (Danielle Robinson) is 26, Kayla (McBride) is 23, DA (Danielle Adams) is 26. We have several players in that thing. We’ve been working on this trade for awhile.”

Montgomery was selected selected 10th overall by the New York Liberty in the 2011 WNBA Draft. Listen below to hear coach Hughes discuss Montgomery as well as the entire draft night for the Stars.

The Stars will open the 2015 season on June 5 against the defending champion Phoenix Mercury before hosting the Tulsa Shock for their home opener on June 14 at Freeman Coliseum.
