San Antonio Stars head coach Dan Hughes said now that his team has clinched a playoff berth, he wanted to see them gain momentum to head into the postseason and it seems the silver and black got the message loud and clear.
Danielle Adams scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Stars defeated the Chicago Sky 84-72 in front of 7,987 fans inside Allstate Arena on Sunday afternoon.
Jia Perkins added 13 points off the bench, while both Shenise Johnson and Kayla McBride each chipped in 12 for San Antonio, who clinched the third seed in the Western Conference with the victory.
”What I like is that I feel we’ve got a little rhythm going into the playoffs, we’ll take some time and get ready,” said Hughes. ”But they’re just awfully good. Minnesota is an exceptional basketball team.”
Chicago was led by Courtney Clements who finished with 17 points and Allie Quigley added 16 for the Sky (15-19), who will play the Atlanta Dream in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
The Sky clinched the fourth seed as they sat Elena Delle Donne, Sylvia Fowles and Epiphanny Prince on Sunday.
”Throughout all our adversities we’re starting the second season – the championship season – 0-0,” said Chicago head coach Pokey Chatman, who had four starters out at various times this season. ”At a time that we need it most they’ll all be playing together and that should infuse them with some energy, excitement and enthusiasm”
The victory gave San Antonio and Los Angeles the same 16-18 record, but the Stars earned the third seed with a tiebreaker.
San Antonio finishes the 2014 season with a 8-9 home record and a 8-9 record away from the AT&T Center.
The Stars finish the regular season with a 16-18 record and will return to the court on Thursday for Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals against the defending champion Minnesota Lynx inside Target Center.
