Alamo City Rumble: Faith Morones wins pro debut

Local super bantamweight Faith Morones made her professional debut on Saturday night at Austin Highway Events Center as part of the eight-card Alamo City Rumble event.

She marked her first pro fight with a win in front of a packed crowd, who seemed to be anticipating this fight on the card opposite fellow Alamo City native Rosie Escobar, who was also making her debut.

For a boxer getting into the ring for her first professional strap, Morones seemed comfortable in the squared circle, and looked anything but inexperienced. Morones looked like the stronger fighter almost immediately after the bell rung, and she closed the first stanza of the bout getting in some strong shots, setting the stage for what was to come in the next three rounds.

Morones used constant movement and her range to fire off quick combos before stepping back to avoid counters, changing angles and resuming her offensive attack. She was able to outpoint Escobar in round two, but Escobar was also able to get in a few short, quick jabs and hooks when they traded.

Escobar was game and willing to stand and trade when Morones looked to attack, but the constant pressure from Morones began to wear down Escobar in the third and fourth, and Morones put the exclamation mark on her first win by constantly beating Escobar to the punch and landing big combos as the fight drew to an end.

After four, I had it 40-36 on the FightScribe card, and the officials agreed, each also scoring it 40-36.

Morones’ boxing acumen and ability will likely make her one to watch as she comes up in the Alamo City. While Escobar started her career with a loss, I don’t think this hurts her very much. She exhibited toughness and determination, and made the fight a fun one  to watch.
